There is something bordering on the spiritual/divine when you listen to the beginning of the reconstructed Beach Boys album “Smile.” The opening salvo of “Our Prayer”gives you a sense that this is music bordering on a near fanatical devotion to finding a sense of purpose for itself. The vocal harmonies on this seem showcase them in a light as flattering as to seem blinding. This leads directly into “Gee” on this version, which also uses some of the themes that will be used on the album. The Beach Boys achieved a depth with this album and “Pet Sounds” that are artistic triumphs in a way that their earlier work could only hint at.
